Packing for a motorcycle trip is a bit like playing Tetris and a strategy game at the same time — and in the end, common sense still scores the most points. Over the years I’ve made many mistakes, replaced gear countless times, including luggage. Today I’m finally confident in my setup and packing system, so I decided to share my knowledge with you — so you don’t have to pay for the same mistakes or interrupt your trip when you realize you forgot something important.

My personal packing list

Below you’ll find the main packing categories for a motorcycle expedition. Full lists for each category — with bonuses and tips — are included in my Guide. You’ll also find a ready-to-print checklist you can use before every trip.

But remember what I always say: this is everything (and often more than everything) you need to leave with a calm mind. Once you’re on the road, unexpected things will happen anyway. You’ll realize you’re missing something — or that something else is completely unnecessary. The first can always be bought, the second can be sent home or left behind. What matters most is feeling safe with what you have. My list gives you a confident start. All you have to do is go.

1. Clothes for every kind of weather

I follow one rule: I assume every possible weather scenario. More than once I’ve been caught badly unprepared, which quickly leads to fatigue and frustration. The worst thing that can happen on a trip is losing thermal comfort — it can ruin the whole journey.

2. Camping — my second home

Even if I don’t need a hotel to sleep well, I do need dry, sheltered and warm conditions. And when I camp, I always make sure I have food and water — for cooking and for tea. You can see my tent, sleeping bag and packing setup in this video, but my list includes 17 items that always travel in my pannier. Yes — one pannier. I chose them so they take up as little space as possible. In motorcycle luggage, there’s no room for compromise.

3. Electronics — my work tools

It’s not just a laptop, camera and charger. I expanded this category because I work remotely and create content. I need my cameras to work and my footage to come home safely. This part is very personal — not everyone needs six power outlets — but you might find some of my solutions useful.

4. “Just in case” — small repairs on the road

I put together a basic tool and spare kit that lets me sleep peacefully. I can already fix a lot myself, and even if I can’t, someone else will — as long as I have the right tools. Every bike is different, so there’s no single perfect set, but in the Guide I show how to build one that solves most problems without ending the trip.

5. Paperwork — “did you pack the green card?”

These may sound obvious, but treat them as a checklist before every trip. Without them, you won’t go far — and sometimes you may even have to go home without your motorcycle. Cash is one of those obvious things. Arrive late at a remote campsite that only accepts cash in local currency, and you suddenly have a problem — plus wasted time and nerves.

Before you leave, make sure you have all your documents — yours and your motorcycle’s — required not only in your destination country but in all the ones you pass through.

I cover these details in the Guide.

6. A waterless shower and first aid

Even the most beautiful trip can lose its shine if you lose your strength or health. Bring your regular medication, but also be ready for emergencies.

I’ve already been a first responder at a motorcycle accident, so I never ride without a properly upgraded first-aid kit.

Feeling fresh also matters — so I carry a few things that let me “take a shower” even when there’s no water or toilet nearby.

7. Calories — spare energy, always with me

I don’t carry a full kitchen. I eat out, but I also cook simple meals next to the bike. Sometimes you arrive exhausted and late, and all you want is to set up camp and rest — so it’s good to know you have energy on hand. I also travel with a spice set, because strong flavors make those wild meals even better.

Bonus content

Creating this Guide took a huge amount of my work and my heart. Not to mention the time I spent testing different solutions before finally arriving at the ones that truly work. I created the entire Guide myself — from the text, through the graphics, to putting it all together. No shortcuts, no artificial intelligence, no ready-made templates. I would really appreciate it if, by purchasing it, you choose to support my work — and after reading the Guide, share your thoughts with me. Remember: along with it, you also get a Q&A session that I’ll be happy to answer for you.

What’s inside the Guide?

  • Luggage divided into 7 logical categories
  • My comments and experience-based pro tips
  • A full packing checklist — ready to print before each of your trips

You’ll also learn:
What to pack in case of rain
How to plan and strategically distribute your luggage on the motorcycle

So — will you pack my way?

Just go

Use this list as a framework, but pack what feels right to you. Don’t wait until you’re 100% ready. My true minimum is a reliable motorcycle, safety and thermal comfort — the rest is secondary. I’ve left with nearly empty panniers and it was still beautiful.

I believe it’s better to regret taking too much than to regret leaving something important behind. In the end, it’s your adventure. Make it the one you need.
